Question 930151: I cannot figure this out...

A population is estimated to have a standard deviation of 9. We want to estimate the population mean within 2, with a 99 percent level of confidence.

How large a sample is required? (Round up your answer to the next whole number.)

Sample required is .

Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Use the formula n = ( (z*sigma)/E )^2

where in this case

n = unknown
z = 2.576 (found using a calculator; based off the 99% confidence interval)
sigma = 9
E = 2

So,

n = ( (z*sigma)/E )^2

n = ( (2.576*9)/2 )^2

n = 134.374464

n = 135 ... round UP to the nearest whole number

Min Sample Size is n = 135
