Question 905822: Find the z value that corresponds to the area: 0.2157.
To solve this, I have looked at the standard normal distribution chart, and got the value of -.79, but I am not sure if I am supposed to subtract it from 1 or not.
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the z-score that you got is the z-score you want.
the area to the left of that z-score will be .2157.
the area to the right of that z-score will be 1 - .2157 = .7843
in z-score tables where z-scores are shown as negative or positive, then the area shown is the area to the left of that z-score.
if they don't specify, then what they are asking for is the area to the left of that z-score, so you're ok with -79.
if they had told you to find the z-score that has an area of .2157 to the right of it, then you would have had to translate that to the area to the left of it and you would have gotten an area of .7843 which would then have translated to a z-score of + 79.
bottom line is you should be ok with a z-score of -79 as your answer.
