I know the sample space is {heads,tails}, but I am confused for the probability portion of the question.

A coin is tossed four times. Show the sample space and find the probability of getting a simple event of three heads and one tails.
------
Sample Space::
4 heads:: hhhh
3 heads:: thhh,hthh,hhth,hhht
2 heads:: tthh,htth,hhtt,htht,thth,thht
1 head::: httt,thtt,ttht,ttth
0 heads:: tttt
=====================
P(3heads and one tail) = 4/16 = 1/4

The sample space is not just {heads,tails}. That would be the sample
space if you were only going to toss the coin one time. Here is the
sample space:

{HHHH,HHHT,HHTH,HHTT,HTHH,HTHT,HTTH,HTTT,THHH,THHT,THTH,THTT,TTHH,TTHT,TTTH,TTTT}

I've colored red all the cases that have three heads and 1 tail.

That's 4 out of 16, so the probability is which reduces to

So th of the time on the average you'll get three heads and 1 tail.
