There are 3+2 = 5 people with brown eyes.
There are 7 girls.
So there are 5+7 = 12 people who are either a girl or have brown eyes...BUT...we have to subtract out 3 because there are 3 girls who have brown eyes (they get counted twice)
So there are really 5+7-3 = 12-3 = 9 people who are either a girl or have brown eyes
