Question 854023: According to a 2010 chicago sun times article, 20% of driver's license applicants fail the written test. If 200 people take the driver's license exam how many people would you expect to pass?

You can solve this problem using proportions.
If you had 20% of all particpants and 200 taking it, you can set up your proportion like this:

x 20
---- = ------
200 100
The 20/100 represents the percent.
Cross multiply
100x = 20 x 200
Divide by 100 to get x alone.
100x/100 = 200 x 20/100
You would get 40 people who will fail the exam.

To find out who will pass the exam, you simply subtract 200-40 and you would get 160 people will pass the test.
