Question 802129: The distribution of the mass of particles emerging from an experiment studying the collisions of high energy particles is Gaussian with a mean 138.2 MeV and STD of 4.58 MeV, but my apparatus accepts (detects) only particles in the mass range 129 < M < 149 MeV. What fraction of good events is not detected by my apparatus?

The distribution of the mass of particles emerging from an experiment studying the collisions of high energy particles is Gaussian with a mean 138.2 MeV and STD of 4.58 MeV, but my apparatus accepts (detects) only particles in the mass range 129 < M < 149 MeV. What fraction of good events is not detected by my apparatus?
--------------------
z(129) = (129-138.2)/4.58 = -2.0087
z(149) = (149-138.2)/4.58 = 2.3581
-------
Your aswer: P(x < 129) = P(z < -2.0087) = 0.0223
------
Your answer: p(x > 149) = P(z > 2.3581) = 0.0092
-----
Add to get p(not detected) = 0.0223+0.0092 = 0.0315
