In a 5 lettered word, first letter can be selected in 5 ways.
In a 5 lettered word, second letter can be selected in 5 ways.
In a 5 lettered word, third letter can be selected in 5 ways.
In a 5 lettered word, fourth letter can be selected in 5 ways.
In a 5 lettered word, fifth letter can be selected in 5 ways.
So total no. of possible "number plates" is 5x5x5x5x5 = 5^5.
