Suppose that a random sample of size 64 is to be selected from a population with mean 40 and standard deviation 5.
(a) What are the mean and standard deviation of the sampling distribution?
μ(x-bar) = 40
σ(x-bar) = 5/sqrt(64) = 5/8
----------
(b) What is the approximate probability that x-bar will be within 0.2 of the population mean μ? (Round your answer to four decimal places.)
z(40.2) = 0.2/(5/8) = 0.32
z(39.8) = -0.2/(5/8) = -0.32
P = (39.8<= x <=40.2) = P(-0.32<= z <=0.32) = 0.2510
-------------------------------------
(c) What is the approximate probability that x will differ from μ by more than 0.6? (Round your answer to four decimal places.)
Same procedure as above.
