picking an ace or a ten from a standard deck of 52 cards
and
picking a red marble from a bag containg 20 white marbles, 8 blue, and 2 red.
My homework is based on questions like these, so if someone helps answer them i may be able to figure out the rest. i looked on the note sheet i have to help explain but i still don't understand, it's very hard for my to understand algerbra.
one example i wrote down is:
what are the odds against drawing a diamond from a standard 52 card deck.
so it's 52/4 = 13 diamonds in a deck, number of unfavorable outcomes/number of favorable outcomes = 39/13=3/1.
i can understand the begining but where did the 39 come from?
please help.

what are the odds against drawing a diamond from a standard 52 card deck.
so it's 52/4 = 13 diamonds in a deck and 39 cards that are not diamonds.
-------------------
odds against = number of unfavorable outcomes/number of favorable outcomes
= 39/13 = 3:1
