Set up ratios (fractions) and cross multiply to solve. Make sure both fractions have the same thing on top and on the bottom. It doesn't matter whether shirts or jeans is on top as long as it's consistent. Let's use shirts/jeans.


8/5 = 40/x (cross multiply) 8x = 200 (divide both sides by 8) x=25 pairs of jeans for 40 shirts.
