Question 632653: I'm being asked "What is the probability that a randomly selected participent is married and highly depressed? The table I was given is a 3 x 3 grid
Marital Status
Never Married Married Formerly Married Total
Low Depression 18 20 8 46
Moderate Depression 24 26 10 60
High Depression 30 24 15 69
Total 72 70 30 175
I tried it as taking the total number of married which is 70 over the total number of participents 175 with an answer of 40% but am told this is not correct. Can you please tell me why or how to figuire out what numbers should be factors? Thank you!

Moderate Depression 24 26 10 60
High Depression 30 24 15 69
Total 72 70 30 175

----
Your problem is an AND problem.
It's not a conditional probability so the denominator is the grand total.
---
The numerator is the intersection of "highly depressed" and "married"
----
Answer: 24/175
