in fact, if you get a 3, you must have gotten an odd number as well, because 3 is an odd number.

these are not mutually exclusive.
a 1 or a 3 are odd and less than 4 at the same time.

getting a number greater than 4 and getting a number less than 4.
these are mutually exclusive.
