Question 493910: For the table that follows, answer the following questions
x y
1 -8
2 -11
3 -14

- Would the correlation between x and y in the table above be positive or negative?
- Find the missing value of y in the table.
- How would the values of this table be interpreted in terms of linear regression?
- If a “line of best fit” is placed among these points plotted on a coordinate system, would the slope of this line be positive or negative?

1. Assuming the relation is linear, x and y would be negatively correlated.
2. For each unit increase in x, y decreases by 3, so if x=4, y would equal -17.
3. The points lie perfectly on the line, so the linear regression would be the same as the line the points lie on, and r would equal -1.
4. Negative, same as #1.
