Question 416263: At a track meet 6 runners out of 20 must be chosen and their position are assigned for the frist heat of the race. In how many ways can this be done? I got 38760, but the teachers says it is wrong. I don't understand how to solve it.
Answer by scott8148(6628) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you solved it as a combination problem 20C6
but it is a permutation problem (20P6) because the assigning of positions means that order counts
any group of 6 runners can have the positions assigned in 6! ways
