Question 411034: The 2009 standard Texas license plate design is of the form BB1B111 (2 letters followed by 1 number; then 1 letter followed by 3 numbers). Texas plates do NOT use vowels. You decide to select a plate at random under these conditions.
c) What is the probability that your plate contains your favorite consonant?
Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There are 5 traditional vowels in English.
26-5=21 consonants
There are 3 consonants on each plate.
The consonants are used with replacement so this is a binomial expansion problem.
Probability of you consonant in the first letter is 1/21
(20/21)^3=.8638 probability that none of the letters contain your favorite.
1-.8638=.1362 the probability that your plate contains your favorite consonant.
