An automobile manufacturer selected a random sample of 150 of its cars and found a defective steering assembly in 5 of the 150 cars. If the manufacturer had turned out 5000 cars under the same conditions, how many of these should it expect to have defective steering assemblies?

Let x represent the number expected to be defective with 5000 cars
Question Sets Up the Proportion

cross Multitplying to solve for x
150x = 5*5000
x = 5*5000/150
x = 167, the number expected to be defective with 5000 cars
