Question 370021: Why might the following not be normally distributed? (a) The time it takes you to drive to the airport, (b) The annual income for a randomly chosen major league baseball player, (c) The annual hurricane losses suffered by homeowners in Florida.
Answer by robertb(5830) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a) Although the frequency of the shorter times of travel are also low, the frequency of the longer times of travel doesn't taper off, on the contrary might even be increasing (maybe due to traffic, etc.)(Might be heavily skewed to the left.)
b) It's possible the distribution is heavily skewed to the right: the higher frequencies are concentrated on the lower annual incomes, while there might be low frequencies for the higher annual incomes.
c) The distribution might be skewed to the left: low frequencies for lower annual losses, but high frequencies for higher annual losses.
