Question 325851: I have been having a hard time with this problem. Not sure why I dont understand it but if I can get help that would be greatly appreciated.
Tom

A Random sample of 600 high school boys showed that 40 had taken diet pills during the past 30 days to lose weight. The researcher wants to test the hypotheses below for p= teh proportion of all high school boys who take diet pills.

______________________________________________________________
1. State the null hypothesis and teh alternative hypothesis in words.
______________________________________________________________
2. Verify necessary data conditions for a z-statistic and calculate the z-statistic.
______________________________________________________________
3. Assuming the null hypothesis is true, find the p-value.
______________________________________________________________
4. Are the results statistically significant at a significance level of α =0.05?
______________________________________________________________
5. Report the conlclusion in the context of the situation.

A Random sample of 600 high school boys showed that 40 had taken diet pills during the past 30 days to lose weight. The researcher wants to test the hypotheses below for p= teh proportion of all high school boys who take diet pills.

______________________________________________________________
1. State the null hypothesis Ho and the alternative hypothesis Ha in words.
The population proportion is 10%
The population proportion is not 10%
______________________________________________________________
2. Verify necessary data conditions for a z-statistic and calculate the z-statistic.
phat = 40/600 = 0.0667
z = (0.0667-0.10)/sqrt[0.1*0.9/600] = -2.7189
______________________________________________________________
3. Assuming the null hypothesis is true, find the p-value.
p-value = 2*P(z< -2.7189) = 0.0065
______________________________________________________________
4. Are the results statistically significant at a significance level of
alpha =0.05?
Since the p-value is less than 5%, the results are significant at
a 5% level.
______________________________________________________________
5. Report the conlclusion in the context of the situation.
Reject Ho. Test results do not support the assumption
that p = 10%
