Question 322458: I was wondering if I could get some help with this problem:
A study compared testosterone levels among athletes in four sports: soccer, track, Lacrosse, and water polo. The total sample size was n =30 (10 soccer, 10 track, 5 Lacrosse, and 5 water polo). A one-way analysis of variance was used to compare the population mean levels for the four sports. The sum of squared errors is SS Error = 100. What is the value of the Mean Square Error (MS Error)?
A) 3.85
B) 10
C) 3.45
Do I take the df of sample size n=30 and the SS error to make it 100/29(n=30-1)= 3.45 or do I take the df of the number of sports and the sample size 30/3 (4 sports-1=3)= 10?
Thanks for all your help!!
Kim

A study compared testosterone levels among athletes in four sports: soccer, track, Lacrosse, and water polo.
The total sample size was n =30 (10 soccer, 10 track, 5 Lacrosse, and 5 water polo).
A one-way analysis of variance was used to compare the population mean levels for the four sports. The sum of squared errors is SS Error = 100. What is the value of the Mean Square Error (MS Error)?
-----
MS(error) = SS(error)/(N-k) where N = # of values in all samples = 30
and k = # of means being compared = 4
----
MS(error) = 100/(30-4) = 100/26 = 3.85
