Question 306277: How do you write the odds for (or in favor of)? The odds against? Suppose a bag contains ten slips with classroom enrichment tasks you can do for extra credit. The tasks include problems related to probability, geometry, and algebra. The number of tasks related to probability is twice the number of tasks related to algebra. There is at least one task devoted to each type of problem.
1. If the odds of choosing an algebra task are 1 : 9, how many slips for each task will there be?
2. If the odds of choosing an algebra task are 1 : 4, how many slips for each task will there be?
3. If the odds of choosing a probability task are 3 : 2, how many slips for each task will there be?

Odds are given as favorable to unfavorable in simplest terms.
1:9 means 1 for (1/10), 9 against (9/10). Since there are 10 total, there is 1 algebra task, 9 non-algebra tasks. However since there are always twice as many probability tasks, then P=2. The remaining are geometry.
