It is required to sit 3 cats and 2 dogs in a row so that the dogs occupy the even places, How many arrangements are possible ?

The even places are place 2 and place 4.
There are 2 ways to arrange the 2 dogs in those 2 places.

The three cats can be selected in 1 way
and can be arranged in 3! = 6 ways
----
The total # of arrangements is 2*6 = 12
