Sketch a 6 by 6 array of the sums you get
when the 1st die is 1,2,3,4,5,6, and the 2nd die is 1,2,3,4,5,6
You should have 36 entries that range from a sum of 1+1=2 to 6+6 = 12

count the number of sums that are greater than 8 : ?

Divide that number by 36 to get the probability.

What are the possible sums of the dice? Anywhere from 2-12. Those are eleven different sums. So eleven will be the denominator:
x/11
Now how many of those sums are greater than 8? 9, 10, 11, and 12! There are four of them, so that will be the numerator.
