The correlation coefficient measures the strength of a linear relationship between two variables. -1 means there is a perfect negative correlation. 0 means that there is a random, nonlinear relationship between the variables. +1 means there is a perfect positive relationship. +/- 1 only occur when all data points are on a straight line (slope respective of sign).
