Can someone tell me what this is about?
you are conducting a one tailed, right tail test using the z-test for means;
>> the level of significance is 0.025; question: what is the critical z-value???
It is the z-value which has on 2.5% of the data to the right.
That z-value is z=1.96
---------------------------------
>> the calculated z-value is 2.33; question: what is the p-value??
It is the percentage of the population that has a greater z-value.
Answer: p-value = P(2.33 < z < 10) = 0.0099..
------------------------------------
>> finally -- based on the above .. do we accept or reject the null hypothesis??
Ans: Reject Ho
----------------
why or why not??
Less than 1% of the test statistic results could have given stronger
evidence that Ho should be rejected.
------------------
Another way to look at this is the following.
If the hypothesized mean were really true the probability of getting
the test results we received was less than 1%. Rather than say "oh,
well, those things happen" we say, that hypothesized mean is wrong.
