In a study of childhood asthma, 4,317 observations were collected on education and smoking during pregnancy, shown in the 4 x 3 contingency table below. At  = .01, is smoking during pregnancy independent of education level? You can use any method you like to solve the problem, but please include hypotheses, critical value, value of the test statistic, p-value, and conclusion.
Education (below) No smoking < Half pack =or> Half Pack

Critical Value for one tale test with alpha=5%,
df = (3-1)(4-1) = 6: Chi-Sq = 12.592

Enter the 4 by 3 data into matrix "A" on a TI calculator
Select Stat/Tests/Chi-Sq
I get:
Test Statistic: Chi-Sq = 227.78...
p-value = 2.278x10^-46
df=6
----------------
Conclusion: Since p-value is far less than 5%, Reject Ho.
Smoking during pregnancy and education level are dependent.
