The question is simply how long would it take Charlemagne to travel the 14 km
distance at the difference in their rates.  Charlemagne's rate is 3.5 km/hr
faster than Roland's, so the problem is the same if Roland had a 14 km head
start but never moved and Charlemagne had a rate of 3.5 km/hr traveling to
Roland's location.
