Question 1201154: Hello, please i need your assistant to solve this;
In October, the campus bookstore asked a random set of freshmen and seniors how much they had spent on textbooks that semester. The bookstore believes that the two groups spent the same amount. What is an appropriate test value for a z test?
Sample size: freshmen 50, seniors 60
Sample mean freshmen $480, seniors $500
Population std.dev. freshmen $52, seniors $63

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you would do a two sample z-test.
you would also have to define the confidence level for the test.
95% confidence level is standard, but it could be anything.
the confidence level is picked before the test is conducted.
the following calculator was used to test your data.
https://www.statology.org/two-sample-z-test-calculator/
results from the test are shown below:

if the test was for the means to be equal, then a two-tailed alpha would be indicated.

at 95% confidence interval, the two tailed alpha would be .025.

that would be .025 on the left of the confidence interval and .025 on the right of the confidence interbval.

if so, then results of the test would not be termed significant because the test alpha was greater than the critical alpha.

if critical z-score was used, the critical z-score would have been plus or minus 1.96.

since the test z-score was less than that, the results would not be considered significant.

here's a reference on the two sample z-test.
the reference is from the same website that had the calculator.
