Question 1200785: A school has 500 students. The principal is to pick 30 students at random from the school to go to the Rose Bowl. How can this be done using a random-number table?
Answer by Solver92311(821) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The illustration is a sample section of a random number table.
Step 1: Number all of the students from 001 to 500.
Step 2: Pick a starting point in the table. For this example, I chose the second group of five digits in the second row, namely 65030.
Step 3: Since we need to select 3-digit numbers, take the first three digits of the selected group. In this case, 650. Since 650 is larger than 500, discard that choice and then select the next three digits, 307 (the last two digits of the starting group and the first digit of the next group). 307 is more than zero and less than 501, so 307 is a valid choice.
Step 4: Repeat step three, taking the next three digits in line without regard to the separation of 5-digit groupings, and either keep the number if it is in the desired range of 001 to 500 or discard it if it is larger than 500.
Since any given student can only occupy one of the 30 available seats at the Rose Bowl if you happen to get a duplicate of a valid number, discard the duplicate.
Continue until you have 30 unique valid selections.
