Question 1194540: Natalie wants to find out the names of high school students' favorite movies. Which of the following would be the best population for Natalie to survey?
A. Adults that ages 35 to 45 years that have high-school-age children
B. Boys that go to the local mall on Saturday morning
C. Twelfth-grade students that will graduate from high school in one week
D. Girls and boys entering the cafeteria for lunch at a high school on Tuesday

Answer: D. Girls and boys entering the cafeteria for lunch at a high school on Tuesday

Reason:

We can cross choice A off the list because adults may likely have different movie preferences compared to teenagers.

Choice B is eliminated because the sample is biased favoring boys, and girls are left out. Boys are over-represented and girls are completely under-represented.

Choice C comes close to what Natalie wants. However, the problem is that the 12th graders are graduating very soon. This means that they technically aren't high school students any more (sure they are for a short while, but you know what I mean). I think Natalie should try to capture a younger demographic. Therefore, choice C is also off the list.

We've eliminated choices A,B and C.

Choice D is probably the best bet. Randomly selecting people who enter the high school cafeteria will likely get the most representative sample of high school students' movie preferences.

Despite choice D being the best answer, it unfortunately has a few flaws
  1. It leaves out people who don't visit the cafeteria.
  2. The sample will only involve people who visited the cafeteria on that particular Tuesday.
  3. Other students, from other high schools, are left out.
With that said, I still think choice D is the best answer among the four choices.
