Question 1176437: In early 2001, the United States Census Bureau started releasing the results of the latest census. Among many other pieces of information, the bureau recoded the race or ethnicity of the residents of every county in every state. From these results the bureau calculated a 'diversity index,' which measures the probability that two people chosen at random are of different races or ethnicities. The census determined that in a county in Wisconsin, 85% of its residents are white, 10% are black, and 5% are asian. Calculate the diversity index for this county.
Answer by Solver92311(821) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The probability that a white person is selected first, and then another white person is selected is 0.85 times 0.85, then the possibility that a white person is selected first and a black person selected second is 0.85 times 0.10. And so on through all nine possible combinations. The Diversity Index will be the sum of the six probabilities where the two races are different, or, to save yourself some arithmetic, add the three probabilities where the races are the same, i.e. WW, BB, and AA, and then subtract that sum from 1.
