Question 1168399: Three friends took a short hike uphill at a steady pace of 1.5 mph and then downhill at a rate of 4 mph. If the time to climb the hill took an hour more than the time to hike down the hill, how long was the entire hike?

Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
distance = rate*time
time up =t
distance up is 1.5t
time down is t-1
distance down is 4(t-1)=4t-4
the distances are equal
so 1.5t=4t-4
2.5t=4
t=8/5 or 1.6 hr.
the distance uphill was 2.4 miles (1.6*1.5)
the distance downhill was 2.4 miles (0.6*4)
The whole hike was 4.8 miles.
