Question 1134768: A student was hired by a city's maintenance department to paint house numbers on the curbs in a particular neighborhood. Each digit had to be painted separately, and the student was paid 50 cents per digit. He painted house numbers from 1-225. How much did he earn?

9  one-digit numbers from 1 to 9:  9 digits, in all.


90 two-digit numbers from 10 to 99:  2*90 = 180 digits, in all.


225-99 = 126 three-digit numbers from 100 to 225:  3*126 = 378 digits, in all.



The total number of the digits  is  9 + 180 + 378 = 567.


The student earns  0.5*567 = 283.50 dollars.     ANSWER
