Consider an experiment with the following distribution of outcomes
x 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
P(x) .105 .285 .024 .082 .142 .251 .041 .060
determine the probability of the outcome of either 1 and 4 occurring
P(1 and 4) is zero because you can't simultaneously get and 1 and get a 4.
P(1 or 4) is 0.105 + 0.082 = 0.187
------------------------------
determine the probability of the outcome 6' (not 6) occurring
P(not 6) = 1 - P(getting 6) = 1-0.251 = 0.749
------------------------------
determine the probability of the outcome of NOT obtaining outcome 3 or 4
P (not 3 or 4) = 1-P(3 or 4) = 1- (0.024+0.082) = 1-0.106 = 0.894
