Question 1121409: please help me to solve this problem: In a group of skilled musician, the probability that a musician picked at random is a bassist is 0.21, and the probability that he/she is a bassist and a music student is 0.07. what is the probability that the musician picked at random is a music student, given that he/she is a bassist?

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
p(a given b) = p(a and b) / p(b)

a is the event that the musician is a music student.
b is the event that the musician is a bassist.

p(b) = .21
p(a and b) = .07

p(a given b) = p(a and b) / p(b) becomes p(a given b) = .07 / .21 which becomes p(a given b) = .3333333333333...... = 1/3.

this is a straight application of the formula.

you just have to know how to decide which event goes where.

p(a given b) means the probability that the musician is a music student given that the musician is a bassist.

lots of references on the web.

just do a search for conditional probability.
