Question 1098440: Two six-sided dice are rolled. What is the probability that one of the dice shows a 5 or the dice sum to 3?
Answer by greenestamps(13198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

There are 6*6 = 36 possible outcomes.

The first die can be a 5 and the second can be any number: 6 ways.
The second die can be a 5 and the first can be any number: 6 ways, for a total of 12.
But now you have counted the outcome that both dice show a 5 twice, so subtract one from the total, to get 11.
And to get a sum of 3 there are 2 possibilities, bringing the total to 13.

So the probability is 13/36.
