Question 1086840: Several factors influence the value obtained for the independent-measures t statistic. Some factors affect the numerator of the t statistic and others influence the size of the estimated standard error in the denominator. For each of the following, indicate whether the factor influences the numerator or denominator of the t statistic and determine whether the effect would be to increase the value of t (farther from zero) or decrease the value of t (closer to zero). In each case, assume all other factors remain constant.
a. Increase the difference between the two samples (explain the logic behind your answer).
b. Increase the size of the two samples (explain the logic behind your answer).
c. Increase the size of the sample variances (explain the logic behind your answer).

a. Increases the numerator, which increases the t statistic making it more likely to be significant. That makes sense, since the further apart are the means, the more likely significance will be reached.
b.Size of the samples increases the denominator in the denominator (where the SE is). That is the same as increasing the numerator. All other things being the same, increasing the sample size increases the numerator and the likelihood of significance.
c. Increasing the sample variances increases the denominator and makes the t statistic smaller. That makes sense, since the more variability, the less likely a difference in means will be as significant.
