Question 1084775: in a family of 4 children, what is the probability of having a set of three and one (disregarding gender)
Answer by math_helper(2461)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
There are 16 possible birth orders. They are: { BBBB, BBBG, BBGB, BBGG, BGBB, BGBG, BGGB, BGGG, GBBB, GBBG, GBGB, GBGG, GGBB, GGBG, GGGB, GGGG }
Out of these 16, 8 have three Girls or three Boys, so P(exactly 3 boys or exactly 3 girls) = 8/16 = .

I re-read your question after posting, and it wasn't clear to me that I interpreted the question correctly above. If birth order matters (i.e. having 3 girls then a boy or having 3 boys then a girl): the probability of having 3 girls then a boy OR 3 boys then a girl is 2/16 = 1/8.
