Question 1075168: In a survey of 220 males ages 18 to 24, 39% were enrolled in college. In a survey of 210 females ages 18 to 24, 48% were enrolled in college. These sample are random and independent. At α=0.09, can you support the claim that the proportion of males ages 18 to 24 who enrolled in college is less than the proportion of females ages 18 to 24 who enrolled in college?
Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is a two sample proportion test
z=mean difference/SE, and I would use a z with a total n of 430.
It is one way test and the z needs to be greater than 1.34
z=(0.48-0.39) numerator
SE is sqrt ((.39*.61/210)+(.48*.52/220))
=0.09/0.0471=1.91
This is greater than the critical value so reject Ho and the study does support the claim.
The pooled proportion is 187/430 =0.435
Here, the SE is 0.435*0.565((1/220)+(1/210))=0.0478 and the z value is 1.88. You will get this value on a calculator.
