Here are all the cards in a deck.  Count them. There are 52:

There are 13 clubs

There are 4 suits, each of which has 3 picture cards,
so there are 12 picture cards
There are NON-picture cards
--------------------------------------------
The overlap is the clubs that are non-picture cards,
so subtract 10 cards ( ace through 10 of clubs ) in order
to avoid counting cards twice
