6x + 2 � 2x = 4x + 1
4x + 2 = 4x + 1
2 = 1
2 isn't equal to 1, so there are no values for x that will make this statement true.
2.) An 18-foot wire is to be cut so that the longer piece is 5 times longer than the shorter piece. Find the length of each piece.
Shorter piece = x
Longer piece = 18 - x
longer piece is 5 times longer than the shorter piece
18 - x = 5(x)
18 - x = 5x
18 = 6x
3 = x
Shorter piece = 3
Longer piece = 15
