Question 1037173: What does it mean when scenarios are DEPENDENT or INDEPENDENT?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
independent events means the probability of the second event does not dependent on what happened in the first event.
dependent events means the probability of the second event does dependent on what happened in the first event.
a typical example would be drawing a colored ball from a jar.
assume the jar contains 3 white balls and 3 red balls.
with replacement, the probability of getting a white ball on the second draw is independent of whether you got a white ball or a red ball on the first draw.
this is because you restored the jar to its original condition by replacing the ball that you drew on the first draw.
there were 3 white balls and 3 red balls in the jar prior to the first draw and there are still 3 white balls and 3 red balls in the jar prior to the second draw.
without replacement, the probability of getting a white ball on the second draw is dependent on whether you drew a white ball or a red ball on the first draw because the ball that you drew on the first draw is not placed back into the jar.
if you drew a white ball on the first draw, the probability of getting a white ball on the second draw is now 2/5 rather than 3/6.
this is because, instead of 3 white balls and 3 red balls in the jar, you now have 2 white balls and 3 red balls in the jar.
if you drew a red ball on the first draw, the probability of getting a white ball on the second draw is now 3/5 rather than 3/6.
this is because, instead of 3 white balls and 3 red balls in the jar, you now have 3 white balls and 2 red balls in the jar.
you can look up on the internet for explanations of independent and dependent events.
one such link that i found is http://www.statisticshowto.com/how-to-tell-if-an-event-is-dependent-or-independent/
there's lots more.
my search was for "statistics independent versus dependent events" without the ".
