Question 1027776: Suppose the maximum for a data set is 12. A careless assistant records it as 21, which is the only mistake in the record keeping. The mistake will increase the mean as well as the median of the data set. True or False? Please explain why.

False. The mean will definitely increase. In fact it will increase by the quantity 9/N, where N is the sample size. Since 12 was the original maximum, changing it to 21 will change the value of the maximum but not the position of the new maximum. So the median won't change.
