Question 1021239: A set of 10 eight-foot long boards are laid end-to-end on a flat surface. If each board has a length variation of σ = 0.5 in. (sigma symbol), what is the likelihood that the set of boards will exceed a total length of l = 962 in. (or 80 ft. + 2 in.)?
Answer by Fombitz(32388) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Assume the board cutting is a normal process, an additional 2" total average amongst the 10 boards would be 0.2".
Since this is within a standard deviation, it's pretty likely to occur.
If you assume a 6 sigma process(?), each board could be between 94.5 and 97.5.
So 10 boards could be between 945 and 975 inches.
So if you want 962, you should work to reduce your variation or sort the lengths to ensure a proper fit.
