Question 1012068: The numbers 1 to n are written on pieces of paper and placed in a box. The papers are removed one at a time, the number is recorded, and then they are destroyed. The first 5 recorded values are 7, 38, 25, 114, and 87. What is your best guess as to the value of n?
Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The sum of numbers from 1 to n is n(n+1)/2. The average is (n+1)/2
The 5 values have a sum of 271 with an average of 54.2
108.4=(n+1)
107.4=n
107 would be my best guess but 114 was picked. Therefore, I would use 114 as my best guess.
