the population is the 2000 computers that were sold in the last 10 years.

the sample is 600 computers that were selected at random.

the variable of interest is the life of the each of those computers.

without any restrictions, the variable of interest would be continuous because the life of each computer could be any real number, even though it is not likely that the life would be stipulated in anything smaller than months or days.

if the intent of the study was to categorize the life in terms of number of whole years or whole months, then the life would be considered discrete because there would be a finite number of years or months that it could be.

any computer that was still in service would have a life of 10+ years.
