Question 32316This question is from textbook Beginning Algebra
: I am having difficulty in understanding the concept of factoring polynomials. I am having trouble with several problems, so I think the difficulty lies in the lack of understanding on my part of factoring. I have a problem from the Fourth Edition of Beginning Algebra by K. Elayn Martin-Gay by Pearson, Prentice Hall. Here is a couple of the problems that I am having difficulty with. I hope that you are able to help me understand them. Thank you!
These actual problems are from a worksheet from class. The instructions state:
Factor each trinomial. Be sure to "FOIL" your answer and check the middle term when trying number combinations.
1). 7x^2 - 18x + 8 =
(7x - 4) (x - 14) = This is where I get lost.
2). 5x^2 - 9x + 1 =
(5x - ? ) (x - ? ) = Since no two factors equal 9, I'm confused and don't
know how to even begin this one.
3). 7x^2 - 8x + 1 =
(7x - 7) (x - 1) =
I can't seem to get any further with these problems. Hope you can help me. Thank you. This question is from textbook Beginning Algebra

Question 32438: Please help answer the following problem.
(x+1)^3 - (x-1)^3
This is what we have so far: (x+1)(x+1)(x+1) = x^3+3x^2+3x+1
However, we are confused about how to handle the subtration between the two expressions in parenthesis that needs to be cubed. Please provide a detailed description, because we have several problems with this same format.
Thanks so much!!

Question 32440: I have another problem that I need some help. My first response was extremely helpful.
Here's my problem:
(x^2-3x+1)^2 - (x^2+5x+1)^2
What we have so far is: (x^2-3x+1)^2 = x^4-6x^3+11x^2-6x+1.
Confused about how to handle the subtraction sign for the following expression. Should it be distributed out throughout the problem? Thanks very much for your help!

Question 32574: In Solving Equations with Rational Expressions how do I answer this problem:
x/2 - 2/3 = 1/x? I figured out this: x/3-2/3 = 1/x, x-2/3 = 1/x, then I cross multiply and I would be at x^2-2x = 3 but after that I'm stuck.
