x = -7
start with x^2 + 11x + 28 = 0
find the factors of 28.
1 * 28
2 * 14
4 * 7
find the factors that add up to 11.
4 + 7 adds up to 11.
factors are (x+4) * (x+7) = 0
multiply these factors out and you get:
x^2 + 7x + 4x + 28
combine like terms to get x^2 + 11x + 28
set each of these factors to 0 to get:
x + 7 = 0 and x + 4 = 0
solve for x to get x = -7 and x = -4
