Question 934628: Divide f(x) by d(x), and write a summary statement in the form indicated. Write in Polynomial form.
f(x)=x^2-2x+3; d(x)=x-4
I honestly have no idea what I have to do. Can you please explain the steps?

Polynomial Division, which works like regular division but your place values are powers of x instead of powers of ten. Your dividend is x^2+(-2)x+3 and your divisor is x+(-4). The process really really, REALLY does work the same way as regular division but you could find that polynomial division is sometimes easier.

This represents the form the start, but this would be with different geometric details when done on paper. The divisor on the left, the dividend on the right "under" the bar.

___________|__________
___________|_____________________________________

What is ?
This is x, so report x in this place of the quotient, and multiply x*(x-4); and then perform the subtraction...

___________|__________x
___________|_____________________________________
x-4________|_________x^2_________-2x_________3
_____________________x^2_________-4

_____________________0___________2x__________3

Now ask what is ?
It is 2.

___________|__________x___________2
___________|_____________________________________
x-4________|_________x^2_________-2x_________3
_____________________x^2_________-4
____________________________________
_____________________0___________2x__________3
_________________________________2x_________-8
________________________________________________
_________________________________0___________11

The quotient is x+2 and the remainder is 11.
This means that your
