Assume you mean, (a couple sets of brackets would help a lot here):
- = 3
:
Multiply by 6 to get rid of the denominators
- = 6(3)
Resulting in:
3(x+3) - (x-8) = 18
:
3x + 9 - x + 8 = 18; a neg outside the brackets changes the sign inside the brackets
:
2x + 17 = 18
:
2x = 18 - 17
:
x = 1/2
:
x = .5

1.75 - (-1.25) = 3; minus a minus is a plus
