Question 89724: A man lives on a lot that he thought was a square, 157 feet by 157 feet. When he had it surveyed he discovered that one side was actually 2 feet longer than he thought and the other was actuall 2 feet shorter than he thought. how much less area does he have than he thought he had?
Answer by checkley75(3666)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
157^2=24,649 sq ft.
155*159=24,645 sqft.
24,649-24,645=4 sq ft. short.
---------------------------------------------------------------
there is a short cut to these type of problems thus:
(x-2)(x+2)=x^2-4 or the loss is 4 from the original size of the square.
(x-10)(x+10)=x^2-100
